Apple

Gender: Feminine

Element: Water

Other Names: Silver Bough, Tree of Love, Fruit of the Gods

A tree sacred to the druids the apple is a symbol of immortality, and the dead. A branch of the apple which bore buds, flowers, and ripened fruit were seen as magical. These could enable people to enter the land of the gods and the dead. Apples are traditionally used at Samhain to honor the dead and at other harvest celebrations like Mabon.

Apples have a long history of being used for divination especially in matters of love and prosperity.  The methods of divination are varied and include such things as counting the apple seeds, burning the seeds each named after a lover, pressing the named seeds with the finger to see which sticks the longest; apple bobbing; throwing the peel over the left shoulder to see it forms the initial of an individual when it lands; and putting an apple under your pillow to dream of your sweetheart.

Apple blossoms may also be used in magical workings. Hanging a garland of apple blossoms above a bed may help with conceiving a child. Other uses include making apple blossom tea to bring health and prosperity to the drinker, bathing in apple blossoms to bring love, or carrying a sachet of apple blossoms to attract a lover.
